This volume on the prevalence, impact, and treatment of the sexually abused male presents 13 papers that address the cultural factors affecting males, the prevalence and impact of the sexual maltreatment of males, and assessment issues.
Abstract
Part I begins with a historical overview of the factors in Western society that continue to influence the explanatory model for sexual abuse. This is followed by a paper that narrows the focus on cultural influences with an examination of how mainstream films have portrayed the sexual abuse and rape of men and boys. The societal problems facing maltreated males are clarified with a description of how the beliefs of the culture lead to shortcomings in the current victim advocacy movement. Papers on the prevalence and impact of sexual abuse address the complexities of attempting to determine the prevalence of the sexual maltreatment of males, the short-term and long-term effects of sexual abuse on males, the process of moving from sexual victim to sexual offender, and factors that reduce the likelihood that a sexual abuse victim will become a sexual abuser. Papers on assessment consider crisis intervention with male sexual assault survivors, the medical aspects of assessment, a structured assessment interview, and the typology of female sexual offenders.
