This study compares the opinions of inmates and staff about co-educational correctional facilities, using questionnaire and anecdotal data. In addition, co-educational correctional facilities were compared with other single-sex facilities in the Bureau of Prisons that have similar classifications. FCI-Ft. Worth is the focus for the study, which is the Federal institution which has the longest history of a policy of sexual integration.
Abstract
The study used three types of data: a Likert-type questionnaire, interviews with both inmates and staff, and comparison with nine other selected Federal institutions. The study reproduced the population ration of males to females at the institution. Both inmate and staff respondents were positive in their assessment of co-educational corrections, with the inmates being considerably more so. Institutional comparisons involved costs, programs, escapes, disciplinary reports, pregnancies, and female employees. Seven benefits of the co-educational correction facilities are listed along with four significant disadvantages. Four questions for further research are listed. 1 note and 21 references (Author abstract modified)
