This booklet presents the purpose and activities of the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), describes NIJ research emphases, explains how researchers can participate in NIJ research projects, and delineates the nature and services of the National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS).
Abstract
NIJ's efforts in research, evaluation, development of analytical techniques, sponsorship of demonstrations, training, and dissemination are described. NIJ research is outlined for the following areas: jail and prison crowding, career criminals, community involvement, justice system management, improving adjudication, crime victims, probation and parole, intergovernmental cooperation, community involvement, and justice system management. The description of NCJRS encompasses the scope of its computerized data base of criminal justice materials, the nature of its reference and distribution services, and the general contents of its bimonthly journal, 'NIJ Reports.' Thirty-two recent publications available from NIJ are described. Ordering information is also provided.
