This document summarizes successful drug prevention programs implemented in schools and communities in California.
Abstract
The programs and practices highlighted here were based in prevention research and worked well in particular settings, ranging from preschools to high schools, colleges and universities, and community and district settings. While most of these programs were based in schools, others demonstrated linkages with local and State education and governmental agencies. These efforts illustrate the importance of collaboration and partnership. All of the programs exemplify the willingness of administrators to integrate new approaches into proven strategies and to keep existing programs fresh with new ideas. The programs highlighted here involve police- school partnerships, peer counseling, antigang initiatives, teacher training, and parent involvement.
