This book documents the widespread rape of women during the Rwandan genocide and its aftermath.
Abstract
During the 1994 genocide, Rwandan women were subjected to sexual violence on a massive scale. In addition to the social and personal trauma resulting from the injuries suffered from sexual violence, the women face dire economic difficulty, problems caused by their second-class status under Rwandan law, health problems, children from rape and property and inheritance rights. The book discusses the background to the genocide and problems documenting gender-based crimes. A chapter on international and national legal protections against gender-based violence examines sexual violence as a war crime, a crime against humanity, an act of genocide and a crime under Rwandan law. The book makes specific recommendations to the Rwandan government and to international bodies, and discusses the national and international response. Notes
