The Drug Farm program in Palm Beach County, Fla., operates as a therapeutic community managed by military discipline for nonviolent, drug-dependent offenders.
Abstract
The treatment facility is a converted, renovated migrant camp in Belle Glade, Fla. It operates as a minimum-security facility with a fenced perimeter having a controlled entrance and exit. Capacity is 132 residents, with space for 16 female residents. The Drug Farm operates in four distinct phases. Phase I consists of a 30-day eligibility screening process coupled with preparatory drug education intended to ease the transition into the intensive therapy and boot camp environment. Phase II is the actual Drug Farm program, which lasts, depending on individual sentences, up to 12 months. Phase III consists of an approximately 4-month residence in a halfway house for the purpose of reintegration. Phase IV is the aftercare component; individuals are required to continue with regular Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings and participate in the activities of the Drug Farm Alumni Association, which include jail visits to potential Drug Farm candidates. In August 1994 the Drug Farm became the first sheriff's operated treatment facility to be accredited by the American Correctional Association. Outcome and impact evaluations are being conducted.
