DESCRIPTION OF PROCEDURE AND AN EVALUATION OF A COOPERATIVE PRISONER PICK-UP UNIT IN A MULTI-DEPARTMENT JURISDICTION.
Abstract
THE REPORT PRESENTS AN OUTLINE OF PROCEDURE AND ESTIMATE OF MANHOUR, VEHICLE, AND FUEL SAVINGS AFTER IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT PRISONER PICK-UP UNIT. BEFORE THE PROGRAM, THE SUBURBAN POLICE DEPARTMENTS HAD BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR TRANSPORTING PRISONERS TO THE COUNTY JAIL, A PROCEDURE REQUIRING TWO OFFICERS AND ONE VEHICLE PER TRIP. THIS EXPERIMENTAL PILOT PROGRAM USED A PRISONER VAN THAT PICKED UP ALL PRISONERS IN SUBURBAN JURISDICTIONS DURING A SINGLE TWOHOUR PERIOD EACH EVENING. THE REPORT CONCLUDES THAT THE MANHOUR SAVINGS WAS APPROXIMATELY FIFTY PERCENT DURING THE PILOT PHASE OF THE PROGRAM, AND THAT THE SUBURBAN DEPARTMENTS, AS A RESULT, WERE ABLE TO KEEP THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF MEN ON THE STREETS.
