This report profiles noteworthy school-based and community- based juvenile drug prevention programs in the southeastern United States and territories; the programs focus on integrated approaches that address the major risk and protective factors related to alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use.
Abstract
The programs are located in Alabama, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Virgin Islands, and West Virginia. The risk factors include community, school, family, individual, and peer risk factors and include economic and social deprivation, mobility, early antisocial behavior, academic failure, family history of alcoholism, alienation and rebelliousness, and friends who use substances. The protective factors include positive social bonding through attachments to people who care and support students and who hold high expectations, commitment to school and to the future through opportunities to develop useful skills and participate in meaningful ways, and a belief in society's norms and values.
