SHOCK PROBATION IS AN EARLY RELEASE PROCEDURE FOR FELONY OFFENDERS BASED ON THE IDEA THAT THE INITIAL SHOCK OF PRISON LIFE IS ENOUGH TO DETER RECIDIVISM.
Abstract
THIS REPORT SUMMARIZES OHIO'S EXPERIENCE WITH THE PROCEDURE. MOST OF THE SHOCK PROBATIONERS WERE FIRST OFFENDERS, NON-VIOLENT PERSONS WHO HAD COMMITTED CRIMES AGAINST PROPERTY RATHER THAN AGAINST PERSONS. OHIO HAD A BETTER THAN 90 PERCENT SUCCESS RATE WITH SHOCK PROBATIONERS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
