Abstract
YOUNG BOYS STEAL ICE CREAM BARS AT A GROCERY STORE AND ARE APPREHENDED. A 16-YEAR-OLD MIDDLE-CLASS GIRL IS CAUGHT TAKING COSMETICS AND ARTICLES OF CLOTHING FROM A DEPARTMENT STORE. SUCH PRACTICES COST HONEST SHOPPERS ABOUT $4 BILLION PER YEAR. METHODS OF APPREHENSION ARE EXPLAINED, INCLUDING THE USE OF ONE-WAY MIRRORS AND PLAINCLOTHES STORE DETECTIVES. THE EMBARRASSMENT AND CONSEQUENCES OF BEING CAUGHT SHOPLIFTING ARE EMPHASIZED: ARREST, JAIL, PROBATION, AND A CRIMINAL RECORD CAN SERIOUSLY AFFECT AN INDIVIDUAL'S FUTURE. IT IS HOPED THAT THESE DEPICTIONS WILL HELP DETER ADOLESCENTS FROM SHOPLIFTING.
