GUARD PERSONNEL SHOULD BE MORE CAREFULLY SELECTED AND BETTER TRAINED AND SHOULD SHARE IN DECISION-MAKING IN ORDER TO BE EFFECTIVE IN THE ROLE OF PARTICIPANTS IN THE TREATMENT OF INMATES LEADING TO RESOCIALIZATION.
Abstract
THE RESULTS OF A SURVEY OF PRISON GUARDS IN NORTH THINE WESTPHALIA, WEST GERMANY, ARE REVIEWED. THAT SURVEY INDICATED, AMONG OTHER THINGS, THAT 44 PERCENT OF PRISON GUARDS CONSIDERED THE PRESERVATION OF SECURITY AND ORDER TO BE THEIR PRIMARY DUTY. ALSO, ABOUT 50 PERCENT OF THEM DEMONSTRATED THE ATTITUDE THAT IMPRISONMENT WAS A SORT OF RETRIBUTION AGAINST THE INMATES FOR THEIR CRIMES. THESE RESULTS INDICATE THAT THERE IS EITHER A NEED FOR GREATER SELECTIVITY IN HIRING GUARD PERSONNEL OR FOR EXTENSIVE RETRAINING OF THEM IN ORDER TO CORRECT THESE ATTITUDES, WHICH TEND TO WORK AGAINST THEIR EFFECTIVENESS IN THE TREATMENT OF INMATES. --IN GERMAN
