This article focused on the Jemaah Islamiyyah (JI), an Al-Qaeda terrorist network operating in Singapore and Singapore’s Intelligence Services Department (ISD) attempts to dismantle or disrupt the network.
Abstract
The activities of Islamic groups in Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines has spilled over into Singapore. This article examines the Jemaah Islamlyyah (JI), a pan-Asian terrorist network linked to Osama bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda network and found in Singapore. Up until 2001, the Al-Qaeda regional network was secret. Then, its’ support and operational infrastructure in Singapore was detected and disrupted by the Intelligence Service Department (ISD). The ISD investigations into JI began shortly after the September 11 attacks on the United States World Trade Center and culminated into the arrest of 15 people, most of which were in Al-Qaeda camps. The article presents descriptions of three proposed terrorist plans targeting the United States and the Singaporean authorities success in disrupting and neutralizing the immediate threat by the JI network. Due to terrorist groups being highly mobile, networked, and pose a threat beyond their country, security can only be guaranteed by cooperation and coordination at the political, security, intelligence, and judicial levels.
