This report presents statistics on personal and property crimes motivated by hate and bias against the race, religion, ethnic heritage, or sexual orientation of New Jersey citizens during 1993, as well as comparisons with similar offenses in previous years.
Abstract
A total of 1,325 bias-related offenses were reported by the police in 1993, an increase of 2 percent from 1992. Harassment accounted for 35 percent of the incidents, while criminal mischief and property damage accounted for 32 percent of the incidents. Racial bias accounted for 59 percent of the crimes; blacks were most often victimized. The Jewish religion was the most frequent target of religiously motivated bias crime. Hispanics were the most frequent targets of ethnically related bias crime. Thirty- nine percent of the offenses were cleared; the 309 arrests involved 190 adults and 119 juveniles. The involvement of organized hate groups was not substantiated in any of the reported bias incidents. Tables and figures
