SIX PAPERS AND A PANEL DISCUSSING THE PROBLEMS AND ISSUES INVOLVED IN CURTAILING AND PREVENTING AIRPLANE HIJACKING.
Abstract
THE SYMPOSIUM BRINGS TOGETHER DIFFERENT VIEWS OF THE SKYJACKING PROBLEM, FROM THOSE OF THE AIRPLANE CAPTAINS WHOSE PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY IS THE SAFE TRANSPORT OF THEIR CREWS AND PASSENGERS AND WHO WOULD FAVOR STRICT SECURITY, TO THOSE OF RIGID DEFENDERS OF FOURTH AMENDMENT GUARANTEES IN MATTERS OF PRIVACY AND SEARCHES AND SEIZURES. IN ADDITION, ANOTHER PAPER BRINGS IN THE ROLE OF THE AIRLINES WHICH MUST CONSIDER THE COST OF GREATER SECURITY AND DECIDE WHAT COMPROMISE MUST BE MADE BETWEEN PASSENGER SAFETY AND RIGHTS AND CORPORATE PROFITS. THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S RESPONSIBILITIES TO THE AIRLINES, THE PILOTS, AND THE FLYING PUBLIC ARE DISCUSSED, AS WELL AS ITS ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF EXISTING INTERNATIONAL CONTROLS. FINALLY, A BEHAVIORAL PROFILE FOR AIR PIRATES IS CONTRIBUTED BY A SOCIAL SCIENTIST.
