A sampling of several police agencies in small towns around the United States indicated that the continued professional development of officers is of major concern and that most small departments go well beyond their State mandates in training their officers.
Abstract
The form of training includes in-house sessions, courses offered by State law enforcement agencies and regional institutions, and courses offered by professional organizations and Federal agencies. Cost is often the determining factor in whether local police agencies use training programs and methods using modern technology, such as Law Enforcement Network Television. The experiences of the police departments of Fort Madison (Iowa), Lake Havasu City (Arizona), Ellsworth (Maine), and Adel (Georgia) illustrate the ways in which small departments are arranging in-service training and the broad array of topics covered.
