Abstract
This videotape is intended for use in 5th through 6th grades. It features real children and youthful actors giving their reasons for not smoking, and some teen smokers describing why they have decided to quit. One young man interviewed some of his peers on the advantages of a smoke-free life and also interviewed a man who had his larynx removed after years of smoking resulted in cancer. The videotape discusses some of the myths about smoking (It's cool!) vs the reality (Only dumb kids smoke!). It discusses smoking's negative effects on the body, the mind, and the wallet, as it adds up the financial costs of smoking, which uses money that could be used for sports equipment, musical instruments, or clothes. It also discusses the hazards of secondhand smoke and smokeless tobacco. An accompanying Teacher's Guide suggests ways to use the videotape as part of prevention education programs. The guide includes a teacher lesson plan, learning objectives, key concepts of a prevention program, review worksheets, student projects, parent guidelines, and prevention resources.
