HISTORICAL STUDY OF COLLECTIVE STUDENT CONFLICT AND VIOLENCE IN AMERICA AND A FRAMEWORK FOR ANALYZING THE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL DYNAMICS OF CURRENT DISORDERS.
Abstract
IN THE HISTORICAL SEGMENT, COLLECTIVE STUDENT BEHAVIOR IS CATEGORIZED INTO FOUR CLASSES - FADDISM, DEPRIVATION PROTESTS, NORMATIVE ACTION CONFORMING TO THE IDEALS AND ETHOS OF SOCIETY, AND IDEOLOGICAL DISSENT CHALLENGING SOCIETAL IDEALS AND VALUES. EACH TYPE OF DEMONSTRATION IS SEEN TO EVOLVE THROUGH THE FOLLOWING PHASES - PREMOBILIZATION, MOBILIZATION, DEMONSTRATION, AND POST-DEMONSTRATION. COUNTERMEASURES APPROPRIATE TO SPECIFIC INTERNAL FACTORS (STUDENTS, FACULTY, ADMINISTRATION AND EXTERNAL FACTORS (POLICE, PUBLIC, MEDIA ARE SUGGESTED FOR EACH PHASE.
