RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PROVIDING AN ENVIRONMENT WHICH WILL MAXIMIZE INMATES' PHYSICAL, SOCIAL, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING, WITH EMPHASIS ON NEEDS OF INDIAN INMATES.
Abstract
THE SENSE OF WELL-BEING DERIVED FROM AN APPROPRIATE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT IS THE BASIS OF THIS STUDY. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE WHICH WILL PROVIDE THE LEVELS OF INMATE WELL-BEING NECESSARY AS A BASIS FOR EFFECTIVE TREATMENT. THE MEANS WHICH ARE INCLUDED FOLLOW BASIC CONCEPTS OF DECENTRALIZATION, DIFFERENTIATION OF TREATMENT, PRIVACY AND FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT FOR THE INMATE, INCREASED INTERACTION AMONG INMATES (PEER SOCIALIZATION), MODERN TRAINING AND OCCUPATIONAL FACILITIES, INCREASED FAMILY CONTACT, AND INCREASED INTERFACE WITH COMMUNITIES FOR VOCATIONAL, SOCIAL, AND CULTURAL OPPORTUNITIES. SPECIAL RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE FOR THE INCARCERATION AND TREATMENT OF INDIANS. THESE ARE THE RESULT OF RESEARCH INTO SUCH ASPECTS OF INDIAN CULTURE AS TRIBAL TRADITIONS AND TABOOS, RACIAL PSYCHOLOGY, RELIGION, AND BELIEFS IN MAN-UNIVERSE RELATIONSHIPS. THE SAME CULTURAL ASPECTS ARE CONSIDERED IN AN ADDITIONAL STUDY OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN FOR INDIAN HOUSING. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE ACCOMPANIED WITH REFERENCES TO RELEVANT SOURCE MATERIAL.
