THE OBJECT OF THIS STUDY WAS TO DETERMINE THE RELATIVE AMOUNT OF TIME THAT BRITISH PROBATION OFFICERS DEVOTE TO THE PREPARATION OF PRE-SENTENCE AND PROBATION INVESTIGATIONS.
Abstract
IN SPITE OF CURIOUS VARIATIONS BETWEEN OFFICERS AND AREAS, SO FAR NOT AT ALL FULLY EXPLAINED, IT WAS FOUND THAT IN TWO DIFFERENT REGIONS, WIDELY SEPARATED GEOGRAPHICALLY AND WITH GENERALLY DIFFERENT WORKPATTERNS, ABOUT ONE-FIFTH OF OFFICERS' WORKING TIME WAS SPENT IN ONE OR ANOTHER TYPE OF WORK CONCERNED WITH THE PREPARATION OF SOCIAL ENQUIRY REPORTS.
