REPORT ON RESEARCH CONDUCTED BY THE INSTITUTE OF CRIMINAL ANTHROPOLOGY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF GENOA, ITALY CONCERNING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A GROUP OF RELEASED OFFENDERS ATTEMPTING REINTEGRATION INTO THE COMMUNITY.
Abstract
THE STUDY TEAM OF PSYCHOLOGISTS, PSYCHIATRISTS, AND CRIMINOLOGISTS EMPLOYED A TWO-PHASE APPROACH TO STUDY THE REINTEGRATION OPPORTUNITIES PRESENTED TO THE GROUP OF 50 RELEASED PRISONERS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 20 AND 69. IN THE FIRST PHASE, PERSONALITY TESTS SUPPLEMENTED BY INQUIRIES INTO SOCIAL, FAMILY, AND CRIMINAL BACKGROUNDS WERE ADMINISTERED TO THE SUBJECTS PRIOR TO THEIR RELEASE. AFTER RELEASE, INFORMATION PERTINENT TO FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS, DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED, WORK PROSPECTS, AND THE NEGATIVE INFLUENCE OF IMPRISONMENT ON OPPORTUNITIES MADE AVAILABLE TO THEM WAS OBTAINED THROUGH PERSONAL INTERVIEWS AND QUESTIONNAIRES. THE FINDINGS TENDED TO SUPPORT HYPOTHESES WHICH STATED THAT THE PERIOD OF IMPRISONMENT REPRESENTS THE INTERMEDIARY PHASE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A CRIMINAL CAREER AND THAT THIS FURTHER AFFECTS SOCIAL MALADJUSTMENT BY ACCENTUATING NEGATIVE PSYCHO-SOCIAL CHARACTERISTICS AND BY EXERCISING A NEGATIVE INFLUENCE ON SOCIAL REINTEGRATION. THE AUTHORS RECOMMEND TRANSFORMING THE PRISON COMMUNITY INTO A THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY AND STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF ALTERNATIVES TO INCARCERATION. --IN ITALIAN.
