The Social Work Bureau of the Nassau County Legal Aid Society (New York) provides social work interventions to influence the sentencing decision of the courts toward attaining rehabilitative objectives for individual clients.
Abstract
The staff prepares presentencing evaluations that are used by the defense to mitigate jail sentences, develops treatment alternatives to incarceration, and recommends options for the management of parole violations. The social worker provides an expert opinion on the rehabilitation potential of the client and a plan to achieve this goal. The bureau has been in operation for 6 years; in that time, support for it has grown and referrals have increased. It currently receives about 500 referrals per year, about half of which receive some significant services. 22 notes.
