THIS PAPER DETAILS DATA FROM THE FIRST HOME VISIT AND FIRST PSCHIATRIC CONSULTATION ON 369 RAPE VICTIMS SEEN BETWEEN APRIL AND OCTOBER 1973 BY THE PHILADELPHIA (PA) CENTER FOR RAPE CONCERN, PHILADELPHIA GENERAL HOSPITAL.
Abstract
A FEMALE SOCIAL WORKER VISITS THE VICTIM AT HOME WITHIN 48 HOURS OF HER EMERGENCY ROOM EXAMINATION. DURING THE HOME VISIT, A PSYCIATRIC CONSULTATION IS SCHEDULED FOR SOMETIME WITHIN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS AT THE HOSPITAL. THE TOTAL VICTIM SAMPLE WAS COMPRISED OF 64 CHILDREN (UNDER TWELVE), 121 ADOLESCENTS (THIRTEEN TO SEVENTEEN YEARS), AND 185 ADULTS. OF THESE, 20 PERCENT WERE WHITE AND 80 PERCENT NON-WHITE. ALL HAD EXTENSIVE SOCIAL WORK INTERVIEWS AND 115 HAD PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION. THE EXPERIENCES OF THE VARIOUS AGE GROUPS IN RELATION TO LOCATION AND TIME OF THE OFFENSE, RACIAL COMPOSITION OF VICTIM AND OFFENDER, TYPE OF FORCE USED (BOTH PHYSICAL AND NON-PHYSICAL, AND TYPE OF SEXUAL ACT ARE DISCUSSED AND COMPARED. TABULAR DATA IS ALSO PRESENTED ON EACH OF THESE AREAS. REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED.
