ANALYSIS OF THE RESULTS OF A QUESTIONNAIRE ADMINISTERED TO A REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE OF 672 BELGIANS TO DETERMINE PUBLIC ATTITUDES TOWARD DRUG ABUSE AND OPINIONS ON THE REACTIONS SOCIETY SHOULD HAVE TO THIS PROBLEM.
Abstract
THE QUESTIONNAIRE ASKED THE RESPONDENTS TO CHOOSE ONE OF 17 POSSIBLE REACTIONS AS MOST APPROPRIATE FOR EACH OF 27 SITUATIONS INVOLVING DRUG CONSUMPTION. THE RANGE OF REACTION INCLUDED BOTH TREATMENT AND SANCTIONS. OPINION FAVORED TREATMENT FOR INDIVIDUAL DRUG USE WITHOUT SOCIAL CHARACTER. OPINION WAS DIVIDED ON REACTIONS TO DRUG USERS WHO COMMIT AN OFFENSE AS A RESULT OF ADDICTION, WHILE OPINION FAVORED SANCTIONS AGAINST DRUG TRAFFICKERS. CHARACTERISTICS OF RESPONDENTS ARE CORRELATED WITH PATTERNS OF RESPONSE. THIS STUDY WAS A CONTRIBUTION OF THE CENTER FOR CRIMINAL POLICY OF THE INSTITUTE FOR SOCIOLOGY OF THE FREE UNIVERSITY OF BRUSSELS, BELGIUM. --IN FRENCH
