EMPIRICAL STUDIES OF THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN STRUCTURAL FACTORS AND RATES OF CRIME AND DEVIANCE ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE VOLUME OPENS WITH DEFINITIONS OF TERMS RELEVANT TO STRUCTURAL RESEARCH, FOLLOWED BY THEORETICAL DISCUSSIONS OF COMMON DENOMINATORS IN STRUCTURAL THEORIES RELATING TO ECONOMICS, ANOMIE, AND SOCIAL DISORGANIZATION; SOCIAL THOUGHT AND SOCIAL STRUCTURE; CONFLICT AND CRIMINALITY; CRIME CONTROL AND DETERRENCE. THE MAJOR PORTION OF THE VOLUME IS DEVOTED TO REPORTS OF STRUCTURAL RESEARCH. THE EMPIRICAL STUDIES ARE ORGANIZED AROUND THE THEORETICAL FOCUSES OF CULTURE, ANOMIE, AND SOCIAL DISORGANIZATION (E.G., CRIME AS A FUNCTION OF ANOMIE, ECOLOGICAL STRUCTURE OF NEGRO HOMICIDE, REGIONAL ANALYSIS OF HOMICIDE RATES, VIOLENCE IN THE SOUTH); ECONOMICS (E.G., ECONOMIC CONDITIONS AND CRIME IN TORONTO, CANADA); AND DETERRENCE (E.G., CRIME AND THE POLICE, THE RELATIONSHIP OF CERTAINTY AND SEVERITY OF PUNISHMENT TO INCIDENCE OF SKYJACKING). ALSO INCLUDED ARE REPORTS OF MULTIVARIATE STUDIES (E.G., STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS, POPULATION AREAS, AND CRIME RATES IN THE UNITED STATES, SOURCES OF VARIATION IN U.S. CITY CRIME).
