SOCIOTHERAPEUTIC TREATMENT, WHICH IS BEING ADMINISTERED SINCE 1962 AT THE S.-VAN-MESDAG CLINIC IN GRONIGEN, NETHERLANDS, IS EVALUATED; ITS POSSIBLE ADOPTION IN WEST GERMAN CLINICS IS DISCUSSED.
Abstract
CRIMINALS UNDER TREATMENT ARE THOSE WHOSE PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTRUBANCES ARE ROOTED IN EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT. EXPERIENCES GAINED AT THE S.-VAN-MESDAG CLINIC ARE EVALUATED IN LIGHT OF CRIMINAL AND PENAL LAW REFORMS IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY AND THE FUTURE ESTABLISHMENT OF SOCIOTHERAPEUTIC INSTITUTIONS IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC. THE PREVENTIVE EFFECTS AND HUMANE ASPECTS OF THE TREATMENT AT THE GRONIGEN CLINIC ARE DISCUSSED. FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEMS IN EXISTING LAW AND LEGAL POLICY ARISING FROM A TRANSFER OF SUCH TREATMENT PRACTICES INTO THE GERMAN CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM ARE ADDRESSED. THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS ESTABLISHING EXPERIMENTAL INSTITUTIONS IN GERMANY AFTER THE GRONIGEN MODEL, CAUTIONING AT THE SAME TIME AGAINST A MIXTURE OF THERAPEUTIC METHODS IN THE SAME SETTING. THE INFORMATION PRESENTED IS BASED ON LITERATURE AS WELL AS IMPRESSIONS AND DATA GATHERED DURING A 10-DAY VISIT IN THE MESDAG CLINIC IN DECEMBER 1976. --IN GERMAN.
