A LISTING IS PRESENTED OF THE ISSUES BEING STUDIED (1977) IN THE U.S. IN CONNECTION WITH TRAFFIC-RELATED OFFENSES AS A CHARACTERIZATION OF SOCIAL SCIENCE APPROACHES TO THE PROBLEM THAT MAY HELP THE NON-AMERICAN SCHOLAR.
Abstract
GENERAL STATISTICAL DATA STUDIED MOST FREQUENTLY ARE OUTLINED, WITH TABLES ILLUSTRATING U.S. MOTOR FATALITIES AND FATALITY RATES FOR 1935-76, AND U.S. TOTAL MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS, ACCIDENT COSTS, AND INJURIES SUSTAINED IN ACCIDENTS FOR 1935-76. ISSUES INVOLVING YOUTHS AND JUVENILES ARE REVIEWED, WITH ATTENTION TO STATISTICS (ILLUSTRATED WITH TABLES SHOWING DRIVERS UNDER 25 YEARS OF AGE AND THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO ALL ACCIDENTS AND FATAL ACCIDENTS FOR 1960-75, AND AS COMPARED TO DRIVERS 25 AND OLDER FOR 1960, 1965, 1970, AND 1975). THE ETIOLOGY OF JUVENILE TRAFFIC OFFENSES IS DISCUSSED, AS IS THE PROBLEM OF JOYRIDING. TRENDS IN TRAFFIC LAW ENFORCEMENT ARE CONSIDERED, AS ARE THE EFFECTS OF TRAFFIC-RELATED OFFENSES ON THE LEGAL ORDER, AND THE RESISTANCE OF THE PUBLIC TO TRAFFIC CONTROLS. FINALLY, DATA RELATING TO THE ENFORCEMENT OF THE NATIONAL MAXIMUM SPEED LIMIT ARE SUMMARIZED. FOR RELATED ARTICLES, SEE NCJ 65847. (MHP)
