Abstract
AN EFFECTIVE SILENCER MUST MEET TWO BASIC CRITERIA - (1) THE BULLET VELOCITY MUST NOT EXCEED THE SPEED OF SOUND AND (2) MEANS MUST BE PROVIDED TO SLOW DOWN THE EXPANDING GASES TO SUBSONIC SPEEDS BEFORE THEY LEAVE THE WEAPON. THE AUTHOR POINTS OUT THAT REVOLVERS, BECAUSE OF THEIR CYLINDER-TO-BARREL GAP DO NOT LEND THEMSELVES TO SILENCER APPLICATIONS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
