VIOLENCE AND JUSTICE, BOTH SOCIOPOLITICAL PHENOMENON, CANNOT BE EXPLAINED IN TERMS OF THE INDIVIDUAL OR THE TRADITIONAL CONCEPT OF LAW AND ORDER.
Abstract
A MEANS OF PUBLICIZING OPPOSITION TO AN EXISTING SOCIAL, POLITICAL, RELIGIOUS, OR OTHER SITUATION, VIOLENCE CAN BE REDUCED AND CONTROLLED, BUT NOT ELIMINATED. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE AN OPPOSING VIEWPOINT OR A PARTY IN OPPOSITION. HOWEVER, VIOLENCE IN THE NAME OF OPPOSITION CANNOT BE LEGITIMIZED BY LABELING IT A 'POLITICAL' ACT, NO MATTER WHETHER IT IS COMMITTED BY A GOVERNMENT OR A TERRORIST GROUP. JUSTICE IS THE EXPRESSION OF SOCIALLY AGREED UPON BEHAVIORAL NORMS. ITS ADMINISTRATION SHOULD, THEREFORE, SHIFT FROM AN EMPHASIS ON REHABILITATING THE INDIVIDUAL AND RIGHTING SOCIAL, POLITICAL, AND ECONOMIC INEQUITIES TO THAT OF SIMPLY PROVIDING JUSTICE, THAT IS, SATISFYING SOCIETY'S NEED TO HAVE JUSTICE DONE. THE USE OF VIOLENCE TO PROVIDE JUSTICE ONLY LEGITIMIZES ITS USE AND DOES NOT CHANGE THE NATURE OF THE ACT. --IN FRENCH...ELW
