This paper explored male police officers' aspirations to leadership positions in the contexts of attribution theory, as well as self-efficacy and valence models.
Abstract
Sixty police officers responded to a questionnaire designed to measure (1) overall leadership aspirations, (2) dispositional vs situational attributions of effective leadership, (3) self-efficacy expectancies and (4) instrumentality and valence expectancies for 13 leadership outcomes. The results showed that, compared with officers with low leadership aspirations, those with high aspirations considered external attributions as more important in determining effective leadership; they also had significantly higher "effectiveness" and "ability-match" self-efficacy ratings as well as higher overall valence scores. 3 tables, 6 references.
