Abstract
THE RESEARCH STUDIED THE INFLUENCE OF TELEVISION ON NEGRO ASPIRATIONS AND ON CIVIL UNREST IN INDIANAPOLIS. A SAMPLING OF 450 NEGROES AND 400 WHITES WAS USED. TELEVISION AND NEWSPAPERS WERE THE MOST IMPORTANT NEWS SOURCES FOR BOTH GROUPS. SIXTY-THREE PERCENT OF WHITES AND 50 PERCENT OF NEGROES SAW NEWS AND TV SPECIAL REPORTS AS BENEFICIAL IN HELPING TO SOLVE MAJOR COMMUNITY PROBLEMS. AMONG THE VIEWERS WHO REPORTED CONCERN WITH CIVIL UNREST, CLEAR, BUT LIMITED, AGREEMENT WAS GIVEN TO THE BELIEF THAT TV PLAYS AN AGGRAVATING ROLE. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
