THIS REPORT ON INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS IN THE PENITENTIARY SYSTEM IN SWEDEN SINCE 1968 SURVEYS A WIDE RANGE OF INSTITUTIONS AND PROGRAMS PRESENTLY BEING ADMINISTERED.
Abstract
THESE PROGRAMS INCLUDE CLOSED AND OPEN INSTITUTIONS. AMONG THE OPEN INSTITUTIONS ATTENTION IS FOCUSED ON PROGRAMS INVOLVING EDUCATION OR EMPLOYMENT, GENERALLY WITH AN ORIENTATION IN THE COMMUNITY. PROGRAMS DESCRIBED INCLUDE A PROFESSIONAL TRAINING SCHOOL ATTENDED BY BOTH PRISONERS AND OTHER CIVILIANS, AUTONOMOUS WORK GROUPS EARNING NORMAL SALARIES IN VARIOUS FORMS OF COMMERCIAL ENTERPRISE, EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR YOUNGER INMATES IN BOTH SOCIAL STUDIES AND OTHER SUBJECTS, A THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY IN A CLOSED INSTITUTION AND FACILITIES FOR SPENDING WEEKENDS IN THE VICINITY OF THE INSTITUTION WITH THE FAMILY AS WELL AS WEEKEND LEAVE TO TRAVEL TO FAMILY HOMES. THE ARTICLE ALSO RELATES OTHER EMERGING INNOVATIONS IN SWEDEN SUCH AS THE AVAILABILITY TO PRISONERS OF ALL SOCIAL BENEFITS AVAILABLE TO THE GENERAL POPULATION AND A TREND TOWARD LOCATING SOME PRISONERS IN INSTITUTIONS NEAR THEIR HOME COMMUNITY TO FACILITATE THEIR RE-ENTRY INTO THE COMMUNITY AT THE TERMINATION OF THE SENTENCE. --IN FRENCH....BDS
