NEGATIVE FACTORS WHICH MAY AFFECT TEACHING EFFORTS IN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING ARE DISCUSSED, AND PROPOSED ACTIONS TO PROMOTE EDUCATIONAL REFORM AND SOCIALIZATION IN THE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION ARE OUTLINED.
Abstract
NEGATIVE ATTITUDES TOWARDS SCHOOL, RESENTMENT DIRECTED AT THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, THE EFFECTS OF INSTITUTIONALIZATION, AND THE INFLUENCE OF THE INMATE SUB-CULTURE ARE AMONG THE NEGATIVE FACTORS THAT THE AUTHOR CONTENDS BE CONSIDERED FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING WITHIN THE AREA OF CORRECTIONS. THE ROLE OF THE TEACHER IN FOSTERING INMATE PRIDE, MOTIVATION, AND SOCIALIZATION IS ALSO DISCUSSED. ACTIONS WHICH THE CORRECTIONAL TEACHER MAY UNDERTAKE TO ADVANCE PUBLIC EDUCATION ON THE NATURE OF CORRECTIONS AND TO PROMOTE CORRECTIONAL REFORM ARE EXPLORED AS WELL. FINALLY, THE ROLE OF THE TEACHER IN COMMUNITY-BASED CORRECTIONS IS OUTLINED.
