A LONG-RANGE STATISTICAL PICTURE OF DELINQUENCY IN CALIFORNIA AND THE PROGRAM OF THE CALIFORNIA YOUTH AUTHORITY, WHICH DEMONSTRATES THE INCREASES IN INDICES MEASURING THE OFFICIAL RESPONSE TO DELINQUENCY.
Abstract
SEVERAL CHARTS ARE PROVIDED WHICH SHOW HOW THE NUMBER OF DELINQUENTS AND THE RATES OF DELINQUENCY IN CALIFORNIA HAVE CHANGED FROM YEAR TO YEAR SINCE 1957. A SERIES OF FOUR CHARTS STATISTICALLY SHOW SOME OF THE MORE IMPORTANT DIMENSIONS OF THE CALIFORNIA YOUTH AUTHORITY PROGRAM. THESE INCLUDE THE NUMBER AND RATE OF COMMITMENTS, TRENDS IN AVERAGE POPULATION, LENGTH OF STAY, RECIDIVISM, AND PERSONAL RATIONS. THE FINAL TWO CHARTS RELATE TO THE CALIFORNIA PROBATION SUBSIDY PROGRAM AND ITS INFLUENCE ON COMMITMENTS TO STATE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS.
