THE SOPHIA LITTLE HOME, A PRIVATE RHODE ISLAND SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCY PROVIDING RESIDENTIAL CARE FOR ADOLESCENT GIRLS, HAS 6 TO 8 PLACEMENTS FOR DELINQUENT GIRLS WITH THE REST OF THE 22 BEDS USED TO GIVE CARE TO UNWED MOTHERS.
Abstract
THE HOME EMPHASIZES FOLLOWUP OF THE GIRLS AFTER THEY LEAVE AND HAS, GENERALLY, BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN EITHER RETURNING THE GIRLS TO THEIR PARENTS' HOMES OR IN FINDING THEM GOOD LIVING ARRANGEMENTS. BECAUSE THERE ARE SO FEW BEDS FOR DELINQUENT GIRLS IN RHODE ISLAND, THE HOME ALWAYS HAS A WAITING LIST. THIS EVALUATION DETAILS THE HOME'S INTAKE POLICY, DESCRIBES THE INDIVIDUALIZED ATTENTION BY A TRAINED SOCIAL WORKER, AND EXPLAINS PROCEDURES USED BY THE HOME TO PLACE THE GIRL IN AN APPROPRIATE COMMUNITY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM. BECAUSE OF THE EXTREMELY HIGH COST OF KEEPING A GIRL AT THE STATE TRAINING SCHOOL, WHICH IS OVER $25,000 PER YEAR, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT MORE SUCH COMMUNITY GROUP HOMES BE ESTABLISHED. TABLES, CONTAINING DATA ON PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF RESIDENTS, LENGTH OF STAY, AND CURRENT STATUS AFTER LEAVING THE HOME AND FOOTNOTES ARE INCLUDED. THE HOME'S SCHEDULE, ITS GUIDELINES FOR RESIDENTS, AND ITS INTAKE QUESTIONNAIRE ARE APPENDED.
