Abstract
MATERIALS SELECTED FOR INCLUSION IN THE BOOK ARE BELIEVED TO BE REPRESENTATIVE EXAMPLES OF STRATEGIES AND APPROACHES TO FACILITATE THE USE OF EARLY DIVERSION ALTERNATIVES TO THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCESS. POTENTIAL USERS OF THE BOOK INCLUDE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PLANNERS AND POLICYMAKERS, LEGISLATORS, ADMINISTRATORS OF PRETRIAL INTERVENTION PROGRAMS, AND SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS WORKING IN THE AREAS OF CRIME AND DELINQUENCY. FEATURES OF THE PRETRIAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE INTERVENTION MODEL ARE FORMALIZED ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA AND A STRUCTURED INTAKE PROCESS; THE UTILIZATION OF DIRECT AND REFERRAL SUPPORTIVE ASSISTANCE IN COUNSELING, CAREER DEVELOPMENT, VOCATIONAL TRAINING, EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, AND RELATED SOCIAL SERVICES; AND THE NONCRIMINAL DISPOSITION OF SUCCESSFUL PARTICIPANTS IN PRETRIAL INTERVENTION PROGRAMS.
