Abstract
Wherever possible, the statistics are displayed by regions, States, and cities to increase their usefulness for local decisionmakers and for comparative analyses. The book has six sections covering the following topics: (1) characteristics of the criminal justice systems, (2) public attitudes toward crime and criminal justice-related topics, (3) the nature and distribution of known offenses, (4) the characteristics and distribution of persons arrested, (5) the judicial processing of defendants, and (6) persons under correctional supervision. Each section opens with an overview of its contents. Data tables, annotated source lists and list of publishers, and explanatory appendixes
