THIS ANNUAL REPORT GIVES THE HISTORY OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACADEMY, A DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSES OFFERED, BUDGET FIGURES, AND DATA ON PERSONS TRAINED IN 1977-1978.
Abstract
THE SOUTH CAROLINA LEGISLATURE AUTHORIZED THE ACADEMY'S ESTABLISHMENT IN 1968, AND BY 1972, CONSTRUCTION WAS COMPLETE AND COURSES HAD BEGUN. SINCE THAT TIME, THE ACADEMY HAS EXPANDED ITS CURRICULUM TO OFFER FULL LAW-ENFORCEMENT TRAINING, SPECIALIZED IN-SERVICE COURSES, WEAPONS TRAINING, DRIVING TRAINING, AND MANAGEMENT COURSES TO 2,600 POLICE PERSONNEL. IN ADDITION, 671 PERSONS ATTENDED WORKSHOPS CONDUCTED BY THE JUDICIAL EDUCATION STAFF OF THE COURT ADMINISTRATORS OFFICE. DURING FISCAL YEAR 1977-1978, THE ACADEMY ALSO TRAINED 1,104 PERSONS FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS; FOR THE SOUTH CAROLINA PROBATION, PAROLE, AND PARDON BOARD; AND FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF YOUTH SERVICES. THESE COURSES INCLUDED BOTH ORIENTATION PROGRAMS AND IN-SERVICE ADVANCED TRAINING. DEPARTMENTS USING THE FACILITY ARE CHARGED $25 PER DAY PER BOARDING STUDENT. THE REMAINDER OF THE OPERATING BUDGET, WHICH TOTALED $1,285,400 IN 1977-1978, COMES FROM THE STATE'S PENALTY ASSESSMENT SYSTEM. A FEW FEDERALLY-FUNDED PROGRAMS ARE ALSO CONDUCTED. STATISTICAL DATA ARE PROVIDED. (GLR)
