Abstract
The report includes information on South Carolina's Department of Corrections statutory authority, history, correctional institutions, personnel, programs, and statistical data of the inmate population, admission, releases and cost per inmate as well as categorization according to most serious offenses of dangerous drugs, burglary, larceny, homicide, robbery, assault, and sexual assault. Significant developments in areas of agencywide administration and management, housing, care, security, and supervision, program for inmates, information activities, and employee cost-reduction efforts are listed. Also included are the highlights of the Plyler versus Evatt suit, a synopsis of recent State legislation affecting the department regarding prisons and administration, fiscal information, and publications.
