This guide for adult inmates of South Carolina's correctional institutions details basic rules and procedures governing prison life and provides information on programs, parole eligibility and prisoners' rights.
Abstract
Policies regarding evaluation, compensation for jobs, visitation, clothing and personal property, correspondence, and money are outlined; the classification process is described; and the custody level system is explained, including factors which determine inmates' assignment to a particular level. Disciplinary procedures for both minor and major violations are mentioned; rules that govern inmates' conduct and penalties for infractions are outlined; and inmates services are noted, including an ombudsman program, mental health care, drug and alcohol abuse treatment, and medical care. Also discussed are policies and regulations for inmates sentenced under the Youthful Offender Act; community programs such as work release, educational release, and furloughs; regulations on parole and pardons; inmates' rights and responsibilities; and general guidelines on communicating with individuals and offices inside and outside the correctional system.
