This article discusses the mission and function of the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organization.
Abstract
In 1995 police services in southern Africa formed what has come to be known as the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organization (SARPCCO). SARPCCO's objectives, as outlined in the organization's constitution, are to: (1) promote, strengthen, and perpetuate cooperation to manage cross-border crime and related matters that have regional implications; (2) prepare and disseminate information on criminal activities; (3) carry out regular reviews of joint crime management strategies; (4) ensure the efficient operation and management of criminal records and effective joint monitoring of cross-border crime; (5) make recommendations to member governments regarding effective policing; (6) formulate systematic regional police training policies and strategies; and (7) carry out acts and strategies to promote regional police cooperation and collaboration. International conflicts, unemployment, and economic distress in SARPCCO countries help to drive up crime rates. The article expresses the belief that the cooperation of member countries will help to reduce crime in the region.
