This chapter presented the rise of terrorism on the Indian subcontinent of southern and southeast Asia.
Abstract
This chapter describes some of the major problem areas in the most troubled countries, from enormous India to tiny Sri Lanka. It presents an awareness of the ongoing battles for autonomy and freedom fought mainly by terrorism and insurrection, as well as a critical look at the potential threat of Islamic efforts to unite into a global power stretching from the Persian Gulf to the eastern parts of the Russian republic. The chapter begins with South Asia and an examination of the history of ancient India followed by an examination of Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Burma, Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. The terrorism and violence generated in these areas discussed span the whole menu of scenarios. They range from individual acts, religious hatred, political genocide, and state terrorism, as well as conventional and nuclear war possibilities. The long histories of many of these nations in the region have created long memories, as well as great hatreds and grudges. Time will tell if these nations can eventually come to some agreement or accommodation. 9 endnotes
