Abstract
The Southern Police Institute (SPI) was established in 1951 offering training, research, and service in the field of law enforcement. SPI established the Command Officers’ Development Course to provide a program of personal and professional development. It offers enhanced management tools for professional police managers. Participants in the course become problem-solvers and decision-makers and work towards establishing professional standards and work practices for themselves and their organization. Problem-solving is encouraged on a team level. The article presents various aspects of the course that include; benefits, challenges, strategic management, and leadership ethics. The course’s intent is to foster and encourage relationships to propel the organization beyond it's expectations, to create and maintain an innovative organizational structure, and to empower those to work with each other and the community to forge a partnership promoting an improved quality of life.
