INVESTIGATION OF THE FACTORS WHICH CAUSE THE SOUTH, IN RELATION TO THE NORTH, TO HAVE HIGH RATES OF HOMICIDE AND ASSAULT, AND LOW RATES OF SUICIDE.
Abstract
AFTER REJECTING MANY HYPOTHESES WHICH PURPORT TO EXPLAIN SOUTHERN VIOLENCE, THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT THE MOST ACCURATE MIGHT BE THAT A PARANOIDAL PERCEPTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT IS THE ROOT CAUSE. THE SOUTH WAS CREATED BY THE NEED TO PROTECT A PECULIAR INSTITUTION FROM THREATS ORIGINATING OUTSIDE THE REGION. CONSEQUENTLY, THE SOUTHERN IDENTITY HAS BEEN LINKED FROM THE FIRST TO A SEIGE MENTALITY. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
