JUVENILE CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAM OFFERING ALTERNATIVES TO COURT AND DETENTION FOR JUVENILE OFFENDERS, COMMUNITY PREVENTION PROGRAMS, AND REFERRAL FOR OFFENDERS TO SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCIES FOR TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION.
Abstract
A POLICE YOUTH SERVICES BUREAU CONSISTS OF ONE MALE AND ONE FEMALE POLICE OFFICER AND ONE SECRETARY. THE TWO JUVENILE OFFICERS INVESTIGATE OFFENSES COMMITTED BY AND AGAINST JUVENILES, INTERVIEWING YOUTH OFFENDERS TO DETERMINE SOCIAL AGENCIES TO WHICH THEY SHOULD BE REFERRED FOR TREATMENT, AND VISITING SCHOOLS TO WORK WITH OFFICIALS AND TALK WITH STUDENTS. THE OFFICERS ARE AVAILABLE 24 HOURS PER DAY, SEVEN DAYS PER WEEK, ON A STANDBY BASIS, TO WORK WITH JUVENILES WHO ARE APPREHENDED BY THE POLICE. CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAMS ARE COORDINATED BY THE BUREAU MEMBERS UNDER THE DIRECTION OF A PROJECT DIRECTOR. THESE PROGRAMS INCLUDE 'RIDE-ALONG' PROJECTS, LUNCH HOUR RAP SESSIONS AT THE SCHOOLS, DEMONSTRATIONS, ASSEMBLIES, AND OTHER ACTIVITIES. THE YOUTH JUSTICE COUNCIL IS FORMED WITH THE PROJECT DIRECTOR AS ADVISOR, AND HIGH SCHOOL AND JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AS MEMBERS. THE COUNCIL MEETS MONTHLY TO DISCUSS JUVENILE OFFENSES OCCURING IN THE AREA, SUGGESTS METHODS FOR THE POLICE TO USE IN PREVENTING SUCH OFFENSES, AND DEVELOPS PROGRAMS WHICH WILL BE ADMINISTERED BY COUNCIL MEMBERS TO CREATE CRIME PREVENTION ATTITUDE AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE.
