This kit includes a training manual, a pocket-sized reference guide, and three audiocassettes intended to assist police and security personnel in learning Spanish words, phrases, sentences, commands, and questions needed to communicate with citizens in situations involving officer safety, interviewing, interrogation, drugs, and weapons.
Abstract
The training is based on a teaching method called Anticipatory Language Learning. This technique considers how an individual acquires a second language and emphasizes speaking and listening in specific real-life situations. It uses an interactive, cooperative, self-assessing, and self-pacing approach to meet the needs of students regardless of their prior knowledge of the Spanish language. The instruction manual contains nine units. The first unit focuses on pronunciation and the use of a communication tool called an Escape Card to maintain control while communicating with Spanish-speaking people in specific situations. The other units focus on police officer safety, motor vehicle stops, driving under the influence, incidents, domestic assault, interview, arrest and booking, and grammar.
