This special double issue examines the computerization of criminal justice information internationally.
Abstract
In addition to a summary of a European seminar on computerization and the development of a global crime and criminal justice information network, separate articles examine the types and uses of criminal justice information systems (CJIS'), discuss hardware and software selection, CJIS planning, user attitudes, and data security and privacy. The feasibility and applications of a global network such as that proposed by the United Nations, also are discussed. The activities of the Council of Europe in the area of computer-aided legal information retrieval systems is outlined. A description is provided of the development and capabilities of a computerized, system-dynamic model of the Dutch criminal justice system as a tool for planning at the local and national levels. The extent and purpose of computerization in each of the main criminal justice agencies is considered with reference to experiences in England and Wales, and factors contributing to the limited effectiveness of CJIS' and ways to overcome them are discussed. Summaries also are provided of general and specialized CJIS' in 16 European countries. Tables, figures, and footnotes. See NCJ-113084-113086.
