Nine articles describe the work of various U.S. agencies and departments in countering domestic and international drug trafficking; three articles focus on the drug program of the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), efforts to counter the laundering of drug money, and the current drug situation in Canada.
Abstract
Three articles encompass the role of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in preventing drug trafficking and abuse, the efforts of the U.S. Customs Service in drug law enforcement, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation's new role in drug trafficking investigations. Another article describes the work of the U.S. State Department's Bureau of International Narcotics Matters in cooperative efforts with narcotics producing and consuming nations to eliminate narcotics at their source. Other articles consider the operations of the National Narcotics Border Interdiction System, Department of Defense assistance in the war on drugs, U.S. Coast Guard efforts to counter drug trafficking at sea, the U.S. Postal Service's interdiction of marijuana, and the U.S. Air Force's drug suppression program. The structure and operations of INTERPOL's drug program are described in another article. The article on the laundering of drug money describes such schemes, explains why efforts to counter them have had limited success, and offers suggestions for improving such efforts. The concluding article in the series focuses on trafficking patterns for various drugs in Canada and domestic and international efforts to counter such trafficking.
