Five articles address various facets of the topic of children in jails.
Abstract
Articles examine a study of the juvenile justice system's paternalistic (and ultimately destructive) tendency to harshly punish delinquent girls by throwing them in adult incarceration environments, often for relatively minor crimes; a case study of the overjailing of juveniles in Minnesota, as opposed to the progressive adult corrections system; a case study of California's policy reversal towards jailing children; a history of litigation on the behalf of children in adult jails; and a review of the legal and policy implications of the Hendrickson v. Griggs case on the juvenile justice system. All articles note the negative effects of jailing juveniles, particularly the high suicide and sexual abuse rates. More positive results of alternative solutions, such as detention centers and halfway houses, are noted. For individual articles, see NCJ 111928-11932.
