This article reviews the issue of training personnel for educating at-risk youth in alternative and institutional settings.
Abstract
Alternative and correctional teachers have reported that their students often present legal, social, behavioral, emotional, psychological and instructional challenges for which they have not been specifically trained and which they are not equipped to address. This article describes two recent teacher-training programs: the Certificate Programs in Alternative and Correctional Education, and the Special Education Teacher Internship. It also addresses the particular personnel training problems caused by the overrepresentation in these student populations of minority youth and youth with disabilities. The training models presented can be applied to both in-service and preservice personnel training, and are recommended for duplication and expansion throughout the Nation. Table, references
