Special Unit, C Wing at Her Majesty's Prison Parkhurst was designed to provide a national resource for the management of disruptive and disturbed inmates in the long-term prison system by individualizing management of inmates; encouraging a high level of staff involvement; facilitating observation, early identification of impending crisis, and remedial action; and encouraging improvements in the mental state, behavior, and social skills of inmates.
Abstract
The unit was designed to hold 35 disruptive inmates. Every inmate on the unit is assigned a personal officer who monitors and records the inmate's behavior and records infringements and improvements. This system permits inmates greater freedom to associate with peers while ensuring a safe and secure environment. The unit operates its own documentation system and is largely self-contained, having a workshop, gymnasium, exercise yard, and facilities for specialist staff and religious and educational activities. Inmates are encouraged to spend as much time as possible out of their cells mixing with staff and other inmates. At present, the unit houses 18 inmates and is in its 11th week of operation. Future development will include expanding the inmate population to capacity and linking pay and privileges to participation in unit activities and appropriate behaviors. 1 reference.
